There are a few things business owners usually know about marketing.
They know it matters because marketing helps people understand who they are, what they do and why someone should choose them.
They also know it often gets pushed to the bottom of the list.
Not because they don’t care, but because they’re busy running the actual business, looking after clients, supporting staff, answering emails, making decisions, and trying to remember whether they ate lunch.
That’s where Starfish Marketing comes in.
Starfish Marketing is a boutique marketing agency based in Albury, working with businesses across Australia. Founded by Mell Millgate, Starfish helps business owners make their marketing happen in a way that is strategic, practical and fun.
In simple terms, Starfish gets the marketing stuff out of your head and turns it into something that makes sense.
And yes, that is a real service, because most business owners have a lot of good stuff in their heads. The tricky bit is turning it into a marketing strategy, website copy, social posts, email newsletters, blogs and consistent content while also running a business.
That is a lot, so it is no wonder marketing often ends up in the “I’ll get to it later” pile, which is a very popular pile and apparently has no maximum capacity.
What Starfish Marketing does
Starfish Marketing (aka Mell) provides marketing strategy, content creation, copywriting, social media management, email marketing, simple websites and marketing mentoring.
Some clients need ongoing marketing support, where Starfish takes the marketing off their plate and makes it happen each month. Others need a strategy, website copy, a content plan or mentoring so they can get their own marketing moving in the right direction.
The work depends on what each business needs.
That might mean helping a service based business explain what they do in a way their ideal clients actually understand. It might mean turning a vague idea into a content plan, making a website more useful, or helping a business owner stop spending time on marketing that is keeping them busy without doing much else.
The aim is to make sure the marketing supports what your business is actually trying to achieve, because marketing for the sake of marketing is a very good way to stay busy while quietly wondering why nothing feels any easier.
The story behind Starfish
The name Starfish Marketing comes from the Starfish story.
You have probably heard it before.
An old man is walking along a beach where thousands of starfish have washed up on the shore. He spots a child picking up starfish one by one and throwing them back into the ocean.
He says to the child, “Why bother? There are too many. You can’t possibly make a difference.”
The child picks up another starfish, throws it back into the water and says, “It made a difference to that one.”
Mell loves that story, and it is the reason Starfish Marketing exists.
She also likes to imagine that the old man joins the child in picking up starfish and throwing them back into the ocean. Then more people come down to the beach that day and join in too.
They connect. They laugh. They make a difference. And yes, they have fun, because making a difference does not need to be miserable work.
By the end, Mell imagines the whole community has helped the starfish return to the ocean, and they have become more connected in doing so.
That is the part that matters most to Starfish Marketing. Is that part of the original starfish story? No. Does Mell still choose to believe it? Absolutely.
One small action can make a difference to one business, one person, one client, or one community. And when more people get involved, that difference can grow into something much bigger.
Why Starfish sponsors BWAW
Starfish Marketing is proud to be the Platinum Sponsor of Business Women Albury Wodonga because BWAW is built on something she cares a lot about: women supporting women.
And when women support women, magic happens.
Not in a fluffy, inspirational quote on a mug kind of way, but in a real, practical, community-building way.
When women in business connect, share ideas, refer each other, cheer each other on, ask questions, offer help and show up for each other, it changes things.
It helps businesses grow. People feel less alone, opportunities are created, and it builds stronger local networks.
That is exactly the kind of community Starfish Marketing wants to support.
BWAW gives women in business across Albury Wodonga and the surrounding region a place to connect, learn and be part of something bigger than their own to do list. For Mell, sponsoring BWAW is one way Starfish can contribute to that.
Because business can be serious without being boring, and community can be practical while still having a bit of magic.
What makes Starfish different
Starfish Marketing isn’t trying to be the biggest agency.
That is not the goal and has never been the goal.
The goal is to do good work with good businesses and help make marketing feel less overwhelming, more useful and fun, and actually connected to the business behind it.
Mell works with clients who value experience, strategy and follow through. They want their marketing done properly, without being buried in jargon or made to feel like they should be doing eleventy billion things every week.
They want someone who gets it, gets them and gets things done and that suits Mell (and Starfish) quite nicely.
Starfish is known for practical marketing advice, strong writing, strategic thinking and the ability to turn a messy collection of ideas into marketing that feels like the business it represents.
There is no pretending a business needs to be on every platform, all the time, saying all the things. Trends are interesting, but they are also allowed to pass quietly by if they make no sense for the business.
Good marketing starts with understanding the business, the ideal clients, the goals and what actually needs to happen next.
Sometimes that means doing more of what is working. Sometimes it means doing less of what is wasting time. And sometimes it means politely stepping away from the Canva template and having a proper look at the strategy first.
Who Starfish works with
Starfish Marketing works mostly with small and medium service based businesses across regional Australia, mainly across NSW and Victoria.
They are often established businesses with owners who are very good at what they do. They know their clients, care about their work, value doing things properly, and want marketing that reflects the quality of their business.
They are also busy. Very busy. The kind of busy where “I’ll just quickly do that later” becomes next Thursday, then next month, then a vague future date nobody wants to talk about.
Marketing matters to them, although urgent things tend to shove important things out of the way. Starfish helps make their marketing happen without making it feel bigger or harder than it needs to be.
What clients value
Clients often come to Mell (and Starfish) because they want someone they can trust to make their marketing happen.
They value that Mell explains things in plain language, asks useful questions, writes in a way that sounds like them, and does what she says she will do.
They also value knowing the work will just get done, without having to chase, remind, double-check or wonder what is happening. That is a big part of why clients hand their marketing over to Starfish. They know it is being looked after, so they can get back to running the actual business.
A lot of the work starts with a conversation about what the business is trying to achieve, who it wants to reach, what is already working, what feels messy, and what keeps getting pushed aside.
From there, the marketing starts to take shape.
One client once described a meeting with Mell as “like having a psych session for my marketing strategy.”
Which still feels weirdly accurate.
Why Albury Wodonga matters
One of the things Mell loves about living and working in the Albury Wodonga region is that relationships still matter here.
People know people, reputation matters, word of mouth matters, and doing what you say you will do matters.
And that is very much how Starfish works too.
Regional businesses are doing interesting, important and valuable work, often without making a big song and dance about it. Good marketing helps more people understand who those businesses are, what they do and why they matter.
When local businesses are supported well, the whole community benefits.
What comes next
For Starfish Marketing, the future is about continuing to work with businesses that value strategy, practical marketing, good relationships, and having fun.
It’s also about continuing to support the business community, including through BWAW.
Because the Starfish story still sits behind all of it.
Small actions, good work and community all matter, especially when they bring people together in a way that creates something bigger. And when women support women, magic happens.
